We met Ramon Antonio on our Fall 2009 Surgical Mission. At the age of 30, Ramon wanted to begin first grade. His family would not send him to school as a child due to his cleft lip and palate. He heard about our mission via the radio and came to us because his first grade teacher told him he needed to speak better if he was to do well in school. JLMF visited his home prior to surgery and discovered that he had not had the operation before now because they did not have a radio or TV so they were not aware of our previous missions, and certainly could not afford to do this privately.
Ramon's goal is to become a cook. He loves to cook and we were able to get a taste of his abilities while visiting his home. JLMF is happy to report that Ramon successfully completed a 5-hour operation and now intends to go to school.
Dr. Judith Lombeida's Legacy
The Judith Lombeida Medical Foundation was founded in memory and in honor of Colonel Judith Lombeida, MD for the purpose of continuing her legacy of serving the critical medical needs of poor indigenous people in Central and South America.
The foundation, a non-profit corporation, was founded shortly after her tragic death in July 2006.
Curing her lifetime and 19-year career in the United States Air Force, Colonel Lombeida participated and led many medical missions, serving thousands of needy patients. For her passion and dedication, Dr. Lombeida was awarded one of Ecuador's highest military medals, "The Star of the Armed Forces," making her the only woman to receive this prestigious honor.
